Economic Injury Level (eil) and Economic Threshold (et) Concepts in Pest Management

چکیده

One of the fundamental concepts of integrated pest management is that each pest species has a definable relationship in terms of damage to the plant or animal host that it attacks. This relationship is often referred to as the damage curve (Fig. 1), which is often determined relative to yield loss. This damage curve can take several forms, but was summarized by Higley and Peterson as having a tolerance or overcompensation phase ([1] no yield response, or [2] positive yield response to injury), a linearity phase ([3] e.g., yield loss = -a (unit injury) + b), and a desensitization and an inherent impunity phase ([4] decreasing and finally [5] no additional yield loss per unit injury). The curve can be used with various methods to determine whether or not any action or pest management tactic (e.g., pesticide, biological control, cultural control, etc.) is needed to reduce the damage associated with this pest. Also, this relationship is uniquely characterized by a critical point, the economic injury level (EIL), or the point in the agricultural production system where the costs associated with pest management equal the benefits from the pest management actions. In other words, below the pest population represented by the EIL there is no need to take pest control actions because they are not economically justified, but onomic damage can occur when the pest population densities are above the EIL. A simple, robust model of the EIL relationship between pest control costs and benefits from control actions was developed by Pedigo et al. as:

The Economic Threshold with a Stochastic Pest Population an Application to the European Red Mite

This paper applies option value theory to determine the timing and value of pesticides in controlling crop damage. Entomologists and economists have both sought to determine '~ction" or 'economic" thresholds which would trigger the application of a pesticide, or an alternative pest control policy. These concepts are reviewed, and the differences arising in each discipline are noted. Two mathema...

Stochastic Modeling of Economic Injury Levels with Respect to Yearly Trends in Price Commodity

The economic injury level (EIL) concept integrates economics and biology and uses chemical applications in crop protection only when economic loss by pests is anticipated. The EIL is defined by five primary variables: the cost of management tactic per production unit, the price of commodity, the injury units per pest, the damage per unit injury, and the proportionate reduction of injury averted...

The probabilistic economic injury level: incorporating uncertainty into pest management decision-making.

Despite the recognition that the economic injury level (EIL) is determined by dynamic biological and economic parameters, which can be highly variable and uncertain, there has been little effort to quantify uncertainty and to use estimates of uncertainty in the determination of EILs. In this paper, we define the probabilistic EIL (PEIL) and develop PEILs for two insect pest scenarios: alfalfa w...

Analytical methods for detecting pesticide switches with evolution of pesticide resistance.

After a pest develops resistance to a pesticide, switching between different unrelated pesticides is a common management option, but this raises the following questions: (1) What is the optimal frequency of pesticide use? (2) How do the frequencies of pesticide applications affect the evolution of pesticide resistance? (3) How can the time when the pest population reaches the economic injury le...

Using banded sunflower moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) egg density to estimate damage and economic distance in oilseed sunflower.

The banded sunflower moth, Cochylis hospes Walsingham (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is an important economic pest of sunflower in the Upper Great Plains of North America. Economic losses due to reductions in seed number, weight, and quality can be significant. Previously, the potential for economic losses were estimated by sampling for adult moths. However, sampling for moths can be difficult and...
